Keynote - Data Clouds and FutureGrid
Prof. Geoffrey Fox
Indiana University, USA
Abstract: Scientific and High Performance computing is changing with new
problems and new technologies. Applications are moving from simulation intensive
to data intensive while multicore and clouds are changing technology landscape.
We describe a new testbed FutureGrid which uses virtualization to provide a
dynamic environment for testing new research and education applications. This is
new component of TeraGrid that started October 1 2009. It is a partnership
between Indiana University, Purdue University, San Diego Supercomputer Center at
University of California San Diego, University of Chicago/Argonne National Labs,
University of Florida, University of Southern California Information Sciences
Institute, University of Tennessee Knoxville, University of Texas at
Austin/Texas Advanced Computing Center, University of Virginia, Center for
Information Services and GWT-TUD from Technische Universtität Dresden Germany.
FutureGrid hardware totals about 5000 cores and is located at Indiana, Purdue,
Chicago, Florida, Texas and San Diego. It has a dedicated network (except to
Texas) that can be isolated and features a programmable network fault generator.
FutureGrid can be considered as a small Science/Computer Science Cloud but it is
more accurately a virtual machine based simulation environment. We describe
early work on FutureGrid using Cloud Technologies (in particular MapReduce
technologies Dryad and Hadoop) to support data intensive applications.
